YOU ASKED FOR IT

NOW WE ARE BRINGING IT TO YOU IN APRIL!!!

Our Child Care survey indicated Child Care Providers wanted training that was different and was located in each county.  Building Families and ISU Extension have collaborated in setting up three trainings in April to meet those needs. Each has a required minimum of participants so please recruit your peers so the trainings will not be cancelled.

April 2nd: Every Child Counts: Building Community in Humboldt

April 9th: Building Relationships with Children Who Challenge Us in Wright

April 28th: Reconnecting Children with Nature-Growing Up WILD in Hamilton

Look below to find the description of the classes and the flier that gives directions for registration.

"Every Child Counts: Building Community"

"Every Child Counts: Building Community" workshop for early childhood professionals

Our job as child care professionals is to create a caring community where each child is valued.  This can be a challenge when you have a child that is a loner or is being excluded by the other children from group play.  Whether you work in a center program or a home child care setting, this training is one you won’t want to miss!  Join us at Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in the Humboldt County office on Monday, April 2 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for this professional development workshop to help you build a caring community where every child feels that they belong and are accepted.

Participants of this program will be able to:

1.      List five qualities of a caring community.

2.      Discuss differences between competitive and cooperative play.

3.      Analyze yourself and the children in your care to determine character strengths.

This workshop session is part of the Better Kid Care series. It is approved for 2.0 DHS clock hours and is posted on the DHS Training Registry (https://ccmis.dhs.state.ia.us/trainingregistry/).  Registration is required with a deadline of March 28.  The cost for the workshop is $10, payable to ISU Extension Humboldt County.   Each participant will receive a copy of A Rainbow of Friends and a copy of Whoever You Are sponsored by Building Families Early Childhood Iowa funds.

If you have questions or want more information, contact Malisa Rader at mrader@mail.iastate.edu or the ISU Extension and Outreach Humboldt County office at (515) 332-2201.

"Building Relationships with Children Who Challenge Us" workshop for early childhood professionals

Caring for children can be rewarding work, but can also be challenging at times – particularly if you have a child enrolled that you are not connecting with. Whether you work in a center program or a home child care setting, this training is one you won’t want to miss!  Join us at Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in the Wright County office on Monday, April 9 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for this professional development workshop to help you build positive relationships with all children – even the ones you find challenging.

Participants of this program will be able to:

1.      Analyze their own temperament to understand strengths and weaknesses

2.      Understand underlying problems when there isn’t a “goodness of fit” for temperament of those in a group

3.      Reframe to recognize strengths in all temperaments and adjust expectations to meet each child’s needs

This workshop session is part of the Better Kid Care series. It is approved for 2.0 DHS clock hours and is posted on the DHS Training Registry (

Building Relationships
"Reconnecting Children with Nature"

"Reconnecting Children with Nature" workshop for early childhood professionals

Nature is everywhere – Outside your window, out the door, down the street…  Join us at Hamilton County Conservation Briggs Woods Park on Saturday, April 28 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for this hands-on session to help you connect your children (and you) with the world just outside their door.

Reconnecting Nature with Children - Growing Up WILD workshops leads you out the door, provides hands-on activities, and resource materials to lead your own nature explorations.  Growing Up WILD activities use age appropriate activities and concepts to build on children’s sense of wonder and invites them to explore nature and the world around them.  Specially written for children ages 3 to 7, activities include sections to address many learning areas: math, science, language, literacy, health living, play, and creativity.

The Growing Up WILD activity guide is a culmination of work by natural resource agencies, early childhood professionals, and educators.  Activities have been correlated to national standards for early childhood education – NAEYC Criteria for Curriculum and Head Start Child Outcomes Framework.  Additional correlations are available to Iowa Early Childhood program and curriculum standards – Iowa Quality Preschool Program Standards, Iowa Early Learning Standards, and Iowa Core Concepts & Skills.

This workshop session is now posted on the DHS Training Registry (
https://ccmis.dhs.state.ia.us/trainingregistry/). Registration is required with a deadline of April 24.  This program is sponsored by Building Families Early Childhood Iowa, Iowa State University Extension & Outreach, and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. There is no cost to the participant. Priority will be given to those working Hamilton, Humboldt, or Wright county due to the funding. Each participant will receive the Growing Up Wild activity guide and many handouts!  This workshop is approved for 4.0 DHS clock hours.

If you have questions or want more information, contact Malisa Rader at
mrader@iastate.edu.
