Early Learning Standards Training

This winter our 0-3 Early Learning Standards Class met for six learning sessions in between snow storms. The class worked on the six modules of standards writing homework that set goals to implement new strategies for learning in their home or classroom.  The Iowa Early Learning Standards were a joint effort between the Department of Education and Human Services. ELS serve as a guide for children’s learning across six domains: Physical well-being and motor development; approaches to learning; social and emotional development; communication, language, and literacy; math and science; and creative arts.  Two classes, one in Humboldt and another in Webster City, were facilitated for the 3-5 ELS. Forty Preschool teachers and associates participated in the 0-5 training sessions. Pictured are the participants of the 0-3 classes. Included in the picture are (not in order): Kristy Daily, Arleen Larson, Angie Sogard, Liz Smith, Tina Ebrecht, Kim Daniels, Trudy Helton, Brenda Smith, Traci Clabough, Donna Jacks, Missy Stouffer, Linda Solberg, Connie Laughry, Susan Arras and Darlene Emmonds.  Not present for the picture were Ann Jensen and Carol Sterns.  The Early Learning Standards Trainings were a collaborative effort between three empowerment areas, Prairie Lakes AEA, and CCR&R.

Quality Rating Scale

Two more child care providers in our empowerment area have been awarded ratings under the Quality Rating Scale this winter.  Annette Daniels and Jill Gronbach are two star providers! Congratulations!

Creative Curriculum for Family Child Care

Creative Curriculum for Family Child Care is currently underway in Humboldt. For the final session the group will attend an Early Learning Conference sponsored by Buena Vista Empowerment area. The conference will feature Sharron Krull.

Mini Grants

This year, preschool classrooms that completed the IQPPS and two series of Creative Curriculum Child profiles were eligible for a $500 mini grant. Marj Wonderlich, Education Consultant, assisted programs in identifying quality toys and equipment to be purchased with the mini grants.  Vouchers for reimbursement need to be into Ann by May 1st. Only one check will be submitted so send all your expenses vouchers at one time.

Empowerment Funding

It appears that the legislator will keep empowerment funding status quo this year. Most projects that were funded this year and are showing reasonable outcomes will receive new contracts.

Parent Tip…Because Kids don’t come with directions!

What Are Your Kids Learning from Play? Everything!!

  • Picking up toys and looking at them
    • Children are learning to use small muscles in their hands and fingers
  • Dropping the spoon over and over again from the high chair
    • Children are learning what objects do when something is done to them
    • Predictability- things happen the same way
  • Putting toys into a container
    • Children are learning better coordination and building strength in arms and hands
  • Stack things and knock them over
    • Children are learning about gravity and balancing
  • Rolling or throwing a ball back and forth
    • Children are learning upper body coordination and following directions
  • Reading a story
    • Children are learning memory-building, order of events, matching pictures to actions  and how to tell their own stories
  • Playing with other children
    • Children are learning about culture and how to interact with the people around them
  • Giving hugs
    • Children are learning muscle control and appropriative physical affection.

It is important for us to model for children, not only what good behaviors are but how to do things appropriately. Encourage the children around you to play and try new things because everything is a learning experience for a child!
