Building Families Vision:
Every child, beginning at birth, will be healthy and successful.
 Building Families Mission:

Building Families’ mission is for children, youth, and families to live in safe and nurturing environments that promote health, independence and success.  Building Families will create a continuum of supports and services that embrace children and their families.

Announcements
  • Positive Behavior Supports is the buzz word in Iowa. Preschools, school districts, child care providers and now parents are being offered classes in solutions to unwanted child behaviors that work!   It’s important to remember that building positive relationships is mainly about positive “time and attention” and not giving your child “things”.  So what are the benefits of quality time with your children? Why do you think quality time is important? What does it do for your child? The parent? Parent Coordinator, Amy Muller, Building Families Parent Coordinator is setting up two- six week series called “Positive Solutions for Families” starting in the fall and again next spring. During these parenting groups, parents will learn how to use encouragement to increase the desired behaviors and decrease unwanted behaviors.  If you have parents who would like the series presented in your area, contact Amy Muller at 515-832-1791 or amuller@hamiltoncountymhsb.org.
  • ELS 0-3 is for child care providers, infant and toddler caregivers, in-home workers and parents in Hamilton, Humboldt and Wright Counties. The next training will be at the Eagle Grove school administration building at 325 N. Commercial on the following dates from 6:30pm to 9 pm: September 30, October 7, October 14, October 21, October 28, and November 4. To register for the class visit the web site www.buildingfamlies.net for the registration form. Send the registration form and $15 to Ann Stewart, 500 Fair Meadow Drive, Suite A, Webster City, Iowa 50595. There will be a class size limit of 20.
  • New Definition: One of the rules in this past legislative session has changed the definition of a “home” for providing registered child care.  It is to mean the location where child care is provided shall be a single family residence that is owned, rented or leased by the person or program providing the child care.  A single family residence includes an apartment, condominium, townhouse, or other individual unit within a multiple unity residential dwelling, but does not include a commercial or industrial building that is primarily used for purposes other than a residence. Providers using such a building to provide child care have the options to become a licensed facility, move to a different location, or discontinue your registration and provide care to 5 or fewer children.
  • Smoking is prohibited in a child care homes, centers and preschools including the outdoor play area and any vehicle the children are transported in.  Non smoking signs must be posted at every entrance and every care used to transport the children.

  • Building Families has received two Prevent Child Abuse Iowa grants this year.  Wright County will use the funds for a Young Parent Support Group.  Hamilton County’s funds will provide a parenting class for parents of children over the age of five.  August 5th will be or first parent council meeting. If you have a parent who would be interested, either from Wright or Hamilton County, in participating in the council, please call Amy. The first Parent Council Meeting we will be discussing a community needs survey and the development of a survey for the Lao and Latino communities.

Job Position Available

CAPP Position Available

The Department of Human Services has granted Building Families a Community Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Grant for Hamilton, Humboldt and Wright Counties. A full time Community Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Coordinator  will be hired to collaborate with existing programs, school districts, faith and businesses to provide a continuum of services and supports that develop protective factors in youth; and will reduce the rates of adolescent pregnancy or additional pregnancies to teen parents. Our target population is male and female teens aged 13 to 18 and their parents in Hamilton, Humboldt and Wright Counties.  Engaging a full time Community Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention (CAPP) Coordinator will allow our counties to focus on comprehensive programming on the prevention of pregnancies in the adolescent years. Collaboration and coordination with community partners will be a major role in the coordinator’s activities; providing science based programs proven to be effective and the identification of educational programs that fit the community; coordinator training to provide the curriculum to the youth; development and distribution of educational materials to youth/parents/community; workshops and informational programs for youth and parents; developing trusting relationships with the school districts and other community entities; family planning activities; and development of an incentive program to teen parent participants.

It is preferred to hire a Registered Nurse for the position but we would consider a Social Worker with experience/knowledge in delivering sexual health information to adolescents/adults and coalition building.  Interested persons my access our web site for additional information and the job application. No timeline for interviewing has been set.
