Power Up YOUth (PUY) Happenings
1st Annual Hamilton County Youth Summit!!!!

Thanks to the efforts of many, PUY just held a very successful youth summit and plan to have a report from Mark and Michele (UNI evaluators) ASAP to help better describe our local conditions regarding alcohol/substance abuse, bullying, peer pressure, etc. Approximately 50 students from WC, NEH, & SH took part in the focus group event on 1/9/12.

I personally want to thank each and every student that had the courage to share their thoughts and opinions with the PUY coalition, their facilitators, community members, etc.  they all deserve a pat on the back, as they did a wonderful job!

Some ask what the next step is.....one thing you can do is save the date:

F
riday March 16: 9:15 AM at WC Firestation

Training 10-1

Officer Galloway is coming to WC to train law enforcement about party patrols, underage drinking trends and other drug trends  He will do a scan of the community on Thursday and wants to talk to coalition members at 9:15 that morning for a half hour prior to presenting the class from 10:00 - 1:00.  He encouraged recruit coalition members and educators to attend the training as well.  He says all that attend  will find the info relevant.   Those that have attended his previous trainings have found them to be engaging and applicable.

There will also be a community presentation on the evening of March 15.  more info to follow.

METHLAND:  IS IT HERE?

Power Up YOUth (PUY) would like to raise awareness among community members about methamphetamine:  how it affects individuals and what it can do to our community.  Everyone throughout Hamilton County (and the surrounding communities) is invited to "Methland:  Is It Here?" on October 27, 2011 at 6:30pm at the Kendall Young Library. Local law enforcement and counselors will share their experiences with this "working man's drug."

The presentation will not only provide information, but, hopefully, will motivate organizations, businesses, and individuals to work with others in the community to address the growing meth problem.

Your attendance will help the effort to educate and safeguard our community.  You are invited to also read, "Methland:  the Death and Life of an American Small Town."  Reading this book may help you to realize that current community conditions make us extremely vulnerable to this "sociocultural cancer."  It can be checked out at the Kendall Young Library.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Kathy Getting at 515-832-5432.

Do you know someone in the community who does great things for youth?

Do you feel they should be recognized for their hard work?

Power Up YOUth’s vision for Hamilton County is “All youth thrive.”  Not some of our youth, but all youth.  If we are to be successful, we must seek to do more than provide programming.  We must connect with everyone in the community, build, and strengthen the assets that are within Hamilton County.

There are numerous examples of everyday people who make a lasting and positive impact in the lives of youth right here in Hamilton County, and we are requesting your assistance in recognizing who they are.

Please take a few minutes to download the nomination form and mail it to Kathy Getting or Tiffany Larson before 10-11-11.  Three Champions will be selected & recognized during winter sporting even halftimes this coming year, one from Webster City/Stratford, one from Northeast Hamilton,  and one from South Hamilton School Districts.

Thank You!!
