OFFERED CURRICULA

Iowa Code states that school districts are required to provide age appropriate, medically accurate, and research-based instruction (comprehensive services) in human growth and development including instruction about human sexuality, self-esteem, stress management, interpersonal relationships, domestic abuse, Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), and the availability of a vaccine to prevent HPV, and HIV/AIDS in grades 1-12.
Therefore, the centerpiece of the CAPP Grant Program is a requirement for community-based grantees, like myself, to implement an evidence-based pregnancy prevention curriculum with a local partner agency or school. Any school within Hamilton, Humboldt, or Wright County may receive free-of-charge curriculum services that include implementation, training, and curriculum.  The CAPP Coordinator can work with you to determine which curriculum will best suit your school district.

Each curriculum listed below utilizes the 17 Characteristics of Effective Curriculum-Based Programs, described in Emerging Answers 2007, in its design and implementation; has been rigorously evaluated to show positive changes in teen sexual behaviors; and, is included on at least two of the lists of recommended evidence-based programs available to practitioners in the field of adolescent pregnancy prevention.

As CAPP Coordinator, I can assist schools and youth-serving agencies in teaching the following curricula:
All4You

OCTOBER IS LET'S TALK MONTH

Let's Talk Month is a Nation-Wide Campaign to encourage honest & open parent-child communication about sexuality issues.  It is also a reminder that it is up to parents and caregivers to pass their own values and beliefs to their kids, while providing complete and accurate information.

In other-words....Parent-child communication is so important!  Studies show that children want to talk to their parents about sexuality.  A solid relationship between a teen and his or her parents can help teens achieve their full and positive potential and avoid a host of problems, including too-early sexual activity, pregnancy, and drug and alcohol abuse.  Take time to talk with your child.  GET THE FACTS, START EARLY, & TALK OFTEN!  If you need tips on how to communicate with your child on tough issues, please call 515-832-1791 ext 204, and ask for Tiffany!

NOTE:  Check out the PSAs (Public Service Announcements) running on KQWC FM 95.7 throughout the year!

ALSO, SAVE THE DATE:  NOVEMBER 21st 6-8pm.  CAPP Coordinator will be holding a "BEE APPROACHABLE" Workshop at Building Families.  For more info, check out the BEE ASKABLE-Parent Info PAGE...

LET'S TALK MONTH FLYER

TEEN PREGNANCY PREVENTION MONTH FLYER

MAY IS TEEN PREGNANCY PREVENTION MONTH!
It is a National Campaign that encourages communities to help young people develop responsible, positive behaviors and attitudes regarding sexuality.  Teen pregnancy and parenting puts both a teen and the child at risk for poor outcomes. Therefore, taking part provides an opportunity to increase public awareness of the need to address the effects of unintended teen pregnancy and early childbearing.  Please check out the documents to learn more!

Why is it important to address Teen Pregnancy & STDs?

According to 2008 IDPH Vital Statistics, babies born to mothers under the age of 20 is an issue in our counties (rate per 1,000):

Wright County ranked 3rd (156.1)
Hamilton County ranked 4th (154.8)
Humboldt County ranked 30th (116.5)

Roughly 1/2 of all high school students (47%) report having sex at least once.

1 out of 3 teenage girls in the US become pregnant at least once by age 20.

1 out of 2 sexually active young people will get a STD by age 25 , & most won't even know it!

Nationally, teen childbearing cost the public $9.1 million, & the average cost per baby born to a teen aged 17 and under in Iowa is $5,286 annually.

Consequences for the children can include:  low birth weight, poverty/being poor, single-parent households, abuse and neglect, not completing school, and entering the child welfare system.

The Center for Health Statistics at the Iowa Department of Human Services has released 2009 data on teen births in Iowa.  In 2009, there were 3448 births to teen mothers, and of these births 56% were to mothers aged 13-18.  The remaining 1500 teen births were to 19 year olds.  To learn more about Iowa's approach to addressing teen pregnancy prevention, please contact the CAPP Coordinator or check out the EyesOpenIowa website.

A first-of-its-kind statewide adolescent sexual health fact sheet is now available. Reporting on more than the negative sexual health outcomes commonly associated with teens, EyesOpenIowa’s facts sheet employs a holistic view of adolescent sexual health.  The fact sheet reports key indicators that impact upon sexual development as well as more typical indicators of sexual health.  CAPP Coordinator also has been provided with Hamilton, Humboldt, & Wright County fact sheets.  Please contact CAPP Coordiantor for a hard copy.
